In many relationships I have observed, a recurring situation happens quite often: women complain, and men immediately “offer solutions.” One side wants to be heard, while the other wants to solve the problem. And just from a small conversation, both can end up feeling uncomfortable without knowing why.
From a psychological perspective, this is not uncommon and is completely normal. Men and women process emotions very differently: women tend to speak to release emotions and connect, while men tend to listen to find solutions. This difference is what makes “complaining” one of the most misunderstood areas in relationships.

Want to be heard, not fixed
The first and most important thing is that when women complain, they usually just need someone to listen. They do not necessarily need answers or solutions right away. But men often switch into “problem-solving mode,” which can unintentionally change the direction of the conversation.
Want to be understood, not analyzed
Women do not always need their feelings analyzed in terms of right or wrong. What they often need is simple: the feeling that “you understand why I feel this way.” When emotions are analyzed too quickly, they may feel misunderstood.
Want their emotions to be respected
A phrase like “you’re overthinking” can make women feel that their emotions are being dismissed. What they want is not who is right or wrong, but for their feelings to be acknowledged as valid.

Want genuine care
During complaints, women often closely observe the other person’s reaction—not just words, but eye contact, attitude, and attention. A truly attentive listener makes them feel significantly more valued.
Want to be on the same side
When sharing, women are not looking for a judge, but for someone who stands with them. If the first response is pointing out mistakes, they may feel alone in the situation.
Want patience
Many emotional stories are not logically structured. Women may speak in circles, repeat details, or shift between emotions. What they need is patience, not interruption or pressure to get to the point quickly.
Want a sense of safety when sharing
Not every woman finds it easy to express her true feelings. If she has been judged or dismissed in the past, she becomes even more reserved. That is why emotional safety in communication is very important.

Want connection, not argument
Many men unconsciously turn conversations into debates about right and wrong. But for women, complaining is not about solving a problem—it is a way to emotionally connect. When it turns into an argument, they often withdraw.
Want presence, not correction
At a deeper level, what women want when they complain is not someone to “fix their life,” but simply someone who is there—listening and staying present. Sometimes presence matters more than advice.
Conclusion
After many observations and also from perspectives mentioned in Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus, one thing becomes quite clear: complaining is not the problem. The problem lies in how we interpret it.
Women do not always need solutions. And men are not wrong for offering solutions. They are simply using different communication styles for the same goal: connection.
When this is understood, conversations that once felt complicated become much lighter, and relationships experience fewer unnecessary misunderstandings.
