Today is a cozy Sunday, and I spent the whole day with little \u201cYogurt\u201d \u2013 my niece who sweetly calls me \u201cMom.\u201d I was surprised at how openly she shared with me about everything \u2013 from schoolwork to friends, even the most random thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"H\u01b0\u1edbng<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

One question that struck me was: \u201cHow can I say no when I don\u2019t want to share my pocket money or snacks with classmates?\u201d\nIt sounds simple, but the story behind it isn\u2019t light at all. Yogurt told me that some kids would say, \u201cIf you don\u2019t share with me, I\u2019ll stop being your friend and badmouth you so that no one else will play with you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hearing this brought me back to my own childhood \u2013 who hasn\u2019t met a not-so-nice friend at some point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s what I told her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc49\ud83c\udffb\"Be firm when someone tries to manipulate you into sharing money or food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc49\ud83c\udffb\" Choose your friends wisely. Be friends with those who are as sincere as you are. You\u2019re not a selfish person \u2013 when you share willingly and your friend does the same, that\u2019s when true friendship lasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc49\ud83c\udffb\"You can politely but clearly say: \u201cI\u2019ll ask my mom, and if she agrees, I can share with you tomorrow.\u201d Or: \u201cIf you need money, I can ask the teacher to talk to your parents so they can give you more allowance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reminded her: \u201cMom taught me that only beggars hold out their hands to ask for money from others. It\u2019s okay to ask your parents, but not your friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone borrows money or school supplies and never returns them, you can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc49\ud83c\udffb\"Make a \u201cdebt notebook\u201d where the friend writes and signs what they borrowed. If they don\u2019t return it, you can ask the teacher to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to self-defense, I was very clear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 If someone threatens to stop being your friend, talks badly about you, or pressures you to share money\/snacks \u2013 be brave and say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 If someone hits you first, you have the right to defend yourself \u2013 fight back to protect yourself, then run fast to a safe place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The one who hits first is always wrong. You must not start a fight, but you have every right to protect yourself if you\u2019re being bullied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most importantly, I want Yogurt to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc9b\" I\u2019m always here \u2013 if you have any problems, just call me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\ud83d\udc9b\" Adults can\u2019t step into every situation, but I believe you\u2019re brave and smart enough to handle things \u2013 and I\u2019ll always have your back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you, Yogurt, for seeing me as a friend and giving me the chance to be a \u201cschoolyard drama consultant\u201d for a day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
